This visual essay is a response to Nettrice R. Gaskin's text called 'Deep Sea Dwellers: Drexciya and the Sonic Third Space'.

2021

The concept for these images is directly linked to the Drexciya music, as a space that exists between the world's Gaskins mentioned in her text. The electronic duo is telling the story of the Middle Passage through their music as a way to transform the experiences of their ancestors. Drexciya uses the Atlantis myth to create a third space for the listeners that can be active participants in making the myth.

My experimentation began with capturing various photographs depicting different aspects of the story, such as the city view of London and the Sea Life aquarium. I then combined objects and places from these images to showcase how the music is intertwined with the complexity of each part of the myth.
